Are UFOs Real? What US Records and Laws Actually Show

If you have just seen something unfamiliar in the sky, you may be asking, “Was that a UFO?” Begin with what you observed. You do not need to dismiss your experience, and you do not need to decide its explanation immediately. Discernment gives both the experience and the evidence room to be understood.

What is the difference between a UFO, a UAP, and an alien spacecraft?

UFO means unidentified flying object. UAP, unidentified anomalous phenomena, is the broader term used in current official investigations. Neither term identifies a maker, an origin, or an intention.

Something may be unfamiliar to a witness yet recognisable to an investigator with additional information. A report can also remain unresolved because the information needed to identify it was never recorded. “Unidentified” describes the state of an investigation; “extraterrestrial spacecraft” is a specific proposed explanation.

What has the US government put into law?

Sections 1841-1843 of the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act, Public Law 118-31, require the National Archives to establish a UAP records collection. The distinction matters: legislation requiring records to be collected is evidence of an official transparency process. A legal category for records is not a scientific finding that the objects described in those records are alien. A proposed bill, an enacted provision, a witness statement, and an investigative conclusion each have a different status.

What do recent US UFO releases contain?

The government's PURSUE portal lists a first release on 8 May 2026 and a fifth release on 7 August 2026. The portal provides files that can be searched and downloaded, allowing readers to examine the source material behind headlines. Official PURSUE records portal

AARO's public imagery catalogue separately identifies cases as resolved, unresolved, or undergoing analysis. For example, its Europe 2022 case PR-013 remains unresolved, although the office assesses with high confidence that the footage shows a physical object. This is useful evidence precisely because its conclusions are specific. A physical object can be present without its identity being known. Authentic military footage can show something ordinary. An unresolved case deserves investigation without being assigned an answer it has not yet yielded.

What does AARO's annual report establish?

AARO's Fiscal Year 2025 report covers 2 June 2024 to 30 May 2025. It records 319 incoming reports and says 114 of those were resolved, alongside 256 older cases. These numbers refer to reporting and resolution categories. They are not a count of confirmed alien vehicles. When comparing annual reports, check the observation period, whether older cases are included, and what “resolved” means.

Do congressional hearings prove extraterrestrials exist?

Testimony can identify questions worth investigating. Its inclusion in a hearing does not independently verify every allegation. Ask whether a speaker is describing a direct observation, repeating something they were told, or interpreting material that readers can examine themselves.

That approach respects witnesses while preserving the distinction between an account and its corroboration.

I saw something and have no doubt. Does that confirm what it was?

You may feel completely certain that you saw something unusual. That certainty can be honestly expressed: “I clearly saw a light I could not identify.” It does not, on its own, establish the light's distance, physical nature, origin, or purpose.

Apply discernment to confidence as well as doubt. What did you see directly? What did you infer? What information might help another person evaluate it? You can respect your experience and remain willing to learn more about its cause.

The aim here is clarity. We do not need a rush of adrenaline or a dramatic conclusion to make an observation worth recording.

What should I record after a possible UFO sighting?

• Note the date, exact time and time zone, location, viewing direction, and approximate duration.

• Describe the movement, colour, sound, and appearance in plain words. Mark estimates as estimates.

• Preserve original photographs and videos, including their metadata and surrounding footage.

• Include landmarks where possible, and note whether you watched through glass or a screen.

• Ask other witnesses to record their own accounts before comparing interpretations.

• Check aircraft, satellite, astronomical, and weather explanations for that place and time.

A short clip cannot establish that something hovered continuously for six hours. That duration would require supporting observation records. A new upload date also does not establish when an event occurred. These questions apply to Colorado reports, international footage, and videos shared by people we trust.

Finding an ordinary explanation is a successful result. Leaving a case unresolved is also honest when the evidence is insufficient.

Can wisdom and spiritual inquiry have a place here?

For me, spiritual inquiry and factual investigation can sit alongside one another when their purposes remain clear. Questions people ask after seeing a UFO

Has America confirmed that UFOs exist?

US authorities document and investigate unidentified observations and publish records about them. That confirmation concerns reports and cases, including some physical objects. It is not a blanket confirmation of alien spacecraft.

Does a UFO stop being a UFO when it is identified?

Once a case has a supported identification, it is no longer unidentified in that investigation. The original sighting can still have been sincere and worth reporting.

Can a real video have a mistaken explanation?

Yes. Authentic footage and correct interpretation are separate questions. Examine the original context, sensor information, and available analysis before assigning an origin or intention.
