How to Calm Your Nervous System: 7 Practical Exercises

The fastest ways to calm the nervous system work through the body: slow breathing with a longer exhale, humming, cold water on the face, a hand on the heart, gentle movement and bare feet on the earth. These gestures are commonly used to support the vagus nerve and signal safety to the body. Practised daily, they build resilience. When the system has been on alert for a long time, a Jnana Kanda session offers a deeper reset.
A tight chest, a racing mind, a body that jumps at every notification. The nervous system is not your enemy — it is trying to protect you. These seven exercises teach it that it can rest. For warning signs, read signs your nervous system is overloaded.
Seven exercises
- 4–8 breathing: inhale for 4 seconds, exhale for 8, for three minutes.
- Humming: hum a low note for one minute; feel the vibration in your chest and throat.
- Cold water: splash your face or hold cold water on your wrists for 30 seconds.
- Hand on heart: one hand on the chest, one on the belly, and feel them rise and fall.
- Orienting: slowly look around the room and name five things you see.
- Shake it off: shake your hands, arms and legs for one minute, like animals do after stress.
- Grounding: stand barefoot on grass, sand or earth for five minutes.
Make it a daily rhythm
The nervous system learns through repetition. Two minutes morning and evening do more than one hour once a month. Choose two exercises you like and keep them.
When exercises are not enough
After months of pressure, the body can stay stuck on alert. A Jnana Kanda session works at another level: purification of accumulated tension, alignment with nature and transmission. Most people feel their breathing deepen and their shoulders drop within minutes.
“Safety is not a thought. It is a feeling the body has to remember.”
