How Do I Clear Heavy Energy When I Feel Overwhelmed?

When you feel overwhelmed, clear heavy energy in two stages. In the moment, take five minutes: stop, breathe out longer than you breathe in, put cool water on your face and wrists, feel your feet, and if you can, light incense and hold a flower while you breathe. In the evening, release the rest with a shower or bath, silence and gratitude. If overwhelm keeps returning, a Jnana Kanda session purifies the deeper layers so your system can settle for good.
Overwhelm arrives like a wave: too many emails, too many voices, too many feelings — yours and everyone else's. Your chest tightens, your thoughts spin and you feel heavy all over. This is the moment to stop trying to think your way out and let the body lead.
The 5-minute clearing ritual
- Stop: put down what you are doing. Say inwardly, “I am allowed to pause.”
- Breathe out: inhale for four counts, exhale for eight. Repeat six times. The long exhale is the fastest way to calm the nervous system.
- Cool water: run cool water over your wrists and splash your face. In Bali, water is the first purifier.
- Feet: press your feet into the floor and feel the ground holding you.
- Incense and flower: if you can, light a stick of incense and hold a flower. Watch the smoke rise and let the heaviness rise and leave with it.
Five minutes will not solve everything, but it will bring you back into your body — and from there, the next step becomes clear.
“When the mind is flooded, return to the breath. The breath always knows the way home.”
Why incense and flowers help
In Balinese homes and temples, incense and flowers are part of every offering, every day. Smoke carries prayers upward; fragrance calms the senses; a fresh flower reminds us of beauty and impermanence. You don't need to be Balinese to feel their effect. The ritual itself tells your system: this is a sacred pause.
In the evening: release the rest
- Take a shower or bath with the intention of letting the day flow away.
- Write down three things that overwhelmed you, then close the notebook.
- Name three things you are grateful for.
- No screens for the last half hour before sleep.
When overwhelm is your normal
If overwhelm visits you every day, your field is probably carrying an accumulated load. In a Jnana Kanda session, in the lineage of Grand Master Mahaguru Mangku Alit Ajna, we begin with purification, realign you with nature, and let sacred energy settle the whole system. Many people describe the feeling of a heavy coat falling from their shoulders. For a longer daily routine, see How to clear heavy energy when you feel like a human sponge.
Frequently asked questions
What is the fastest way to calm overwhelm?
A long exhale combined with cool water on the wrists and face. It works within a minute or two for most people.
Is overwhelm a sign that something is wrong with me?
No. It is a sign that your system has received more than it can process right now. If it comes with panic attacks or lasting distress, please also speak with your doctor.
Can I do this ritual at work?
Yes — the breath, the water and the feet are discreet. Keep the incense and flower for home.
