How to Stop Taking On Other People's Energy

How to Stop Taking On Other People's Energy

To stop taking on other people's energy, stop merging and rescuing, and start witnessing. Taking on happens when you step into someone's emotion as if it were yours or try to carry it for them. Instead: stay in your body, recognise “this is theirs”, send it back to them with love, and clear yourself with water and grounding every day. Over time your field learns to feel without absorbing. A Jnana Kanda session helps release what you have already taken on and strengthens your centre.

Taking on other people's energy is not something that happens to you by accident. It is a habit — usually a loving one — that your system learned. And like every habit, it can be gently unlearned. Here is how I guide people through it.

The two ways we take on energy

The first is merging: you feel someone's emotion so fully that the line between you and them disappears. Their sadness becomes your sadness. The second is rescuing: you feel their pain and, out of love, try to carry it for them. Both come from a good heart. Both leave you carrying weight that was never yours to hold.

“Carrying someone's pain does not heal it. It just means two people are suffering.”

From merging to witnessing

The shift is from merging to witnessing. A witness is fully present, fully loving — and stays in their own body. Imagine sitting beside a friend on the bank of a river. You can see the current they are in. You don't need to jump in to show you care.

A simple practice: return it with love

  1. Notice: a sudden emotion, heaviness or tension after being with someone.
  2. Ask: “Is this mine?” If the answer is no, don't argue with it.
  3. Return: imagine gently handing it back to the person, wrapped in light, with the words “This is yours. I trust you with it.”
  4. Cleanse: wash your hands and face or take a shower, letting the water carry away what remains.
  5. Refill: light incense, breathe slowly, and feel your own energy return to your centre.

Returning energy is not rejecting the person. It is honouring their strength and their path. Everyone has the right to their own experience.

Make it a daily practice

  • Morning: ground yourself before the day starts.
  • During the day: keep part of your attention in your body when you listen.
  • Evening: water, gratitude and silence before sleep.
  • Weekly: time in nature — the sea, the forest, the mountains.

When it's already too much

If you have been taking on energy for years, you may not know anymore what is yours. In a session in the Balinese lineage of Grand Master Mahaguru Mangku Alit Ajna, I work as a channel: first purification, then realignment with nature, then sacred energy. What isn't yours is released; what is yours comes back. Those who want to carry this for life can explore learning Jnana Kanda.

Frequently asked questions

Will I become cold if I stop taking on energy?

No. You will actually become more loving, because you will have more energy to give and less fear of being overwhelmed.

How do I know if energy is mine or someone else's?

Absorbed energy often feels sudden, foreign or unrelated to your life. Asking “Is this mine?” and noticing your body's first response is a reliable start.

How long does it take to change this habit?

Many people notice a difference within a few weeks of daily practice. A session can speed up the process.
